You’ve always known you had a desire to build things.

It’s time to turn that desire into a career with an associate degree in computer-aided design/architectural drafting. In this program, you’ll master the computer software necessary to prepare drawings commonly used in the building industry. You’ll also receive training on recent releases of industry-standard computer-aided design applications, as well as a theoretical background that includes mathematics, communications skills and career management techniques. And with practical lab projects and a learn-by-doing environment, you’ll have the opportunity to immediately begin putting your knowledge into practice. Our industry-experienced faculty will mentor you to make sure you’re prepared to enter into your career with the entry-level skills necessary to begin working in the drafting field as an architectural drafter, CAD drafter, structural drafter or auto CAD professional.

Computer-Aided Design/Architectural Drafting Course Information

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be able to:

  • Apply skills essential to success within the field of computer-aided drafting and design. Demonstrate an understanding of both commercial and residential architectural concepts and principles
  • Demonstrate an understanding of both commercial and residential architectural concepts and principles
  • Apply the foundational skills necessary to prepare for the AutoDesk® AutoCAD®, AutoCAD® Architecture, AutoCAD® Civil 3D®, Autodesk® Inventor™, and Revit® Architecture certifications.*

Architectural Drafter

  • Create detailed scale drawings used in construction
  • Create preliminary drawings from architect, engineer and designer sketches during design development
  • Produce production drawings including working sets with all the details for the actual construction

CAD Drafter

  • Draw detailed and scaled drawings using computer software
  • Prepare electronic layouts, charts, detailed scale drawings and material and equipment requirements from sketches, specifications and standard layouts provided by customers, consultants and/or departmental contacts
  • Review and manipulate electronic files received from consultants and departmental contacts for revisions and submittals

Structural Drafter

  • Assist engineers with the production of detailed construction sets
  • Aid in specific construction projects focusing on both commercial and residential construction
  • Design and create the graphics that accompany text, convert photographs and illustrations into digital images and manipulate the text and images to display information in reader-friendly formats
  • Design page layouts, develop presentations and advertising campaigns and execute color separation of pictures and graphics material
