The Atlanta Northlake Campus “Students Against Violence Everywhere” (SAVE) Chapter is hopeful a law they helped inspire will get passed this year. The Greggory Savelio Law would mandate outside video surveillance at gas stations in Georgia, and is currently in legislation. The Westwood College SAVE Chapter was founded by a group of students in memory of Gregg Savelio. He was a senior at the campus, and was gunned down at a DeKalb County gas station on August 22, 2009.
The chapter’s mission is to prevent violence against students through increased awareness and proactive change. The group promotes nonviolence through student education and support for victims of violent crimes. There are over 30 faculty members, friends, and Savelio’s family members involved in this project.
The chapter is staying active, and recently hosted the first monthly Pizza Fundraiser and Safety Series. The Dekalb County Police Department participated, and will continue giving monthly lectures on a variety of topics related to safety and preventing violence. The next in the series will focus on sexual abuse, and will be held on March 25th.
